The new Biogeochemistry Lab at the University of llinois at Urbana-Champaign(UIUC) invites applicants for two PhD student positions starting in Fall 2020 to conduct interdisciplinary research on agricultural nitrogen cycle biogeochemistry。 The positions are part of the interdisciplinary Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES) PhD program and are fully funded up to four years via competitive fellowship, research assistantship, and/or teaching assistantship。
Previous experience with stable isotopes is preferred but not required.Candidates from diverse disciplinary backgrounds are welcome but substantial research experience is preferred. Project Description:In this project, you will study the dynamic self-organisation of microtubules into paraxial arrays either in differentiating skeletal myoblasts or in neurons。 You will either use gene editing to fluorescently label endogenous cytoskeletal proteins and perform live cell imaging experiments using lattice light sheet imaging and expansion microscopy to quantitatively assess changes in the microtubule array organisation upon specific perturbation of microtubule crosslinkers。 Alternatively, you will apply imaging-based biochemical assays to reconstitute microtubule organisation or microtubule-based transport from purified proteins in vitro。 Please see recent publications from our lab describing these assays 。
This project seeks to understand the influence of thermomechanically processed Titanium (Ti) alloys and the mechanism of microstructure evolution on the mechanical properties particularly that of fatigue. A novel processing route of Ti alloy will be investigated as well in this work to determine its applicability for industrial applications. This project is seeking candidates with experience in thermomechanical simulation of metals however those with metallurgy and/or metal processing backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply too. Thin films are solid layers with thicknesses ranging from single atomic layers up to a few micrometers. They show scientifically and economically interesting properties that cannot be reached with bulk materials. Typical applications are electronic or optical devices, coatings, sensors or functional surfaces, to name only a few. For a better understanding and further development of thin-film materials it is of fundamental importance to get insight into structure-property relations down to the atomic scale. The emerging field of single-crystal diffuse scattering provides valuable information on corresponding local order phenomena such as the structure of domains and domain walls, domain sizes or local symmetry violations. However, corresponding experimental and modelling techniques have so far only rudimentarily been transferred from bulk material to thin film applications.
The ideal candidate has a master degree in physics, material science or a closely related discipline and a strong interest in crystallography and X-ray diffraction methods. Aptitude for experimental work and interest in computer programming (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++) are essential for the success of the project. Knowledge of solid-state physics and a strong motivation to work in an international and multidisciplinary team complete your profile.
